Nasuni Access Anywhere Server FAQ

Common questions

What exactly does Nasuni Access Anywhere Server do?
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Provide an on-cloud and self-hosted product called the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server that can be used by companies and teams. The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server unifies information from different data stores and SaaS services to making them easier to access, search, and manage. Over 60 different storage services are supported and unlike other vendors no files need to be replicated to provide this service.

For businesses the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server acts as an enabler for IT to 'take back control of data compliance challenges presented by Cloud Services, as well as those more broadly presented by e-compliance, privacy, consumer protection, Intellectual Property, and content governance.

The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is available as a SaaS Service, as a hybrid on-premises solution, and as an on-site solution for companies, educational establishments and Service Providers. It can be used with a single storage endpoint or combined with other on-site or on-cloud storage solutions. It natively supports Mac,Linux and Windows with 'Cloud' desktop Drives and Synchronization Tools and natively supports iOS and Android mobile devices.
What is stored on the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Servers?
For the SaaS hosted offering we store only meta-information about files ie. filename, date uploaded, created, modified etc. If files are upload directly to the Storage Provider from Nasuni Access Anywhere Server access clients then additional information can be stored, such as the GEO location at the time of upload and where the file is stored. Files continue to reside on the original file hosting provider unless the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server S3 service is being used in which case Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is hosting files directly on the Amazon S3 service. See here for our full privacy policy. Note that NO file information is stored from the use of the software on-premises. There is no 'dial home'.
What is the difference between the US and EU Servers?
The EU and US Servers have the same functionality but are accessed using different URL's:

https://storagemadeeasy.com http://eu.storagemadeeasy.com
No data is shared between the two servers, and users of one cannot login to the other to access their data. This is to protect against cross border data regulations. Users from Europe should use the EU Server rather than the US Server, although US users are also welcome to use this.

If you are an existing user that has a US account, you can register for a free account on the EU server and if you have bought specific packages then contact us and we can assign them to the your Account on the EU Server. Setting up your Clouds again should be straight forward as Nasuni Access Anywhere Server does not store any files from these Clouds.

If you are a business customer who is currently using the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server S3 hosting and wish to use the European Servers then please contact us.
How do I reset my password?
You can reset your password here for the US Servers and here for the EU servers.
How do I turn on HTTPS?
For free Accounts HTTPS is always used when you login to the website and also whenever connection to any mapped clouds and submitting information on sign up. Personal and Business Accounts can turn on HTTPS for the entire session for all web pages. Free users can also purchase HTTP as a feature from "Cloud Add In's" after Web login.

All access clients have a HTTPS option to encrypt traffic between Nasuni Access Anywhere Server and the access client.
What about Security?
There are many layers to security. Firstly the SaaS hosted Nasuni Access Anywhere Serveris monitored daily by Mcafee Secure to check for potential security flaws, SQL injection vulnerabilities etc. You will see the date in the footer of the site when the site was last audited.

Login to the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server site always uses SSL. Similarly for any connections to Storage where authentication details are passed, these are always made over SSL.

If a Storage Provider supports OAuth, which is a mechanism to connect to a Storage Provider without revealing password details, then we use this. For passwords of Storage Providers that don't use OAuth, if you choose to store these (and you can choose to re-authenticate these on a per session basis) then we store such passwords encrypted in a database. The key to un-encrypt is stored on a key server and we do this when we need to on a per session basis.

The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server username and password used for authentication is encrypted using SHA-256 (SHA-2) with a salt for extra security.

User login is required in order to obtain a token for a session, which allows a user to access a specific Nasuni Access Anywhere Server resource without using a username and password each time. Once the token has been obtained, the user uses the token, that offers access to a Nasuni Access Anywhere Server resource, for up to 1 hour (it times out if there are no user interactions or is removed if the user logs out). This mechanism of authentication be complimented or replaced with other authentication systems, such as Active Directory which is available by default for Cloud File Server business users, when using our service.

Our staff have no way to access your password as it is stored encrypted. There is a means to access meta-data in the logs and DataBase related to an account if a user requests help with a problem, but even so this still requires an Administrator to authorise access, and it still does not grant any access to any encrypted passwords. This is only ever used if users request us to look at a problem or issue with their account.

A user can also choose to encrypt any files uploaded directly using Nasuni Access Anywhere Server access clients using managed 256 bit AES encryption. This means that users need to provide the private key for the files and Nasuni Access Anywhere Server does not store it anywhere. If a user forgets the key, he/she will not be able to un-encrypt the file.

The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server logs the IP address of users who have successfully authenticated and displays the previous IP address that the user logged in from on each login. This can also be accessed from the user's DashBoard. Cloud File Server Business users also have the means to audit all file events to a log and filter, download and analyse these. Also Nasuni Access Anywhere Server features the ability for Cloud File Server business administrators to turn off access to individual devices or desktop access clients for any user.

Lastly the whole Appliance / service can be run and managed on-premise behind the corporate firewall for complete control. For further details on security please see the security section on our Wiki.

A security white paper can be downloaded here from further information.
What about PRISM and Data Snooping?
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is a UK LTD company, Vehera Ltd. SME servers are in two locations, the United Stated and Europe. The United States Servers would be subject to the US Patriot Act as they are hosted on US soil, and we would only share information if a federal or state warrant was issued. The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server EU servers are hosted in Europe (Amsterdam and UK) and would not be subject to the Patriot Act.

Two other things you should note:

1. The File Fasbic SaaS service features public / private key encryption of remote data where Nasuni Access Anywhere Server do not retain the key. This means you can encrypt data held on remote cloud and need to access that data through the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server service and use the key only you know.

2. Nasuni Access Anywhere Server offer a totally on-premises enterprise version of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server to use with local data which again features public / private key encryption.
What happens when the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Syncs with my Cloud Storage?
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server does a meta-sync. What this means is that it discovers information about your files such as filename, filesize, datestamp of file etc. We store this information in your account and use it to display the file list in all the clients and tools that you can use with our service. Your files don't move anywhere, they stay exactly where they are.
How can I delete my Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Account?
You should log into the web and navigate to your Cloud DashBoard and from here you will be able to delete your account (left hand side of the DashBoard). Deleted Accounts will go into a queue and will normally be deleted within 30 days. Within this time period you can come back to use and ask us to re-activate your account if you find there is some data there you need to be able to get back or use.
How do I copy or move files from the web?
You can copy files by simply clicking on a file or shift-clicking a selection of files in the web. Now hover your mouse over the files and you will see it change to a hand. Left click the mouse and you can drag these files to another folder or even cloud provider either in the left or right file manager pane and let go of the mouse left button. They will now be copied.

If there are a lot of files they will be copied in the background and you will not be able to interact with the files until this process is done.

Move is exactly the same except you hold down shift on the keyboard prior to letting go of the left mouse button. You will see the message change to 'move' rather than 'copy'.
How do I change or rename a cloud provider in my file tree?
Simply login to the web, right click the root of the cloud provider node you wish to change in the file tree, and choose 'rename' to assign a new name. Note that you may need to logout of any desktop or web clients and log back in to see the change take affect on the clients.
What size files can I upload?
This depends on which provider you are using. Amazon S3 supports file sizes that are up to 5GB. If you are using another storage provider then individual file sizes can be limited. You should check with your Cloud Provider to verify the latest upload size supported over their API.
If I delete a file by mistake can I get it back?
Yes, if you have the Trash feature set to active. Look in your Trash bin from the File Manager you will see that the file is available until you empty the trash. This means that is not actually deleted from the underlying provider until Trash is emptied. Note that it is possible for you to turn the Trash option off and if you do this then the file is immediately deleted.
Are you intending to support any other cloud vendors?
Yes, we are always updating our cloud storage providers.
What are Public Files?
Public Files are files that you have designated to be public and can therefore by found by anyone. You have special url in which you can share files that are made public with anyone. This url takes the form of /users/your username. These files can also be shared as an RSS feed, or through a WordPress blog, and even as an iPhone Application. Public files can also be searched from the Windows Apps by other users. You can combine Public file sharing with password protection if you wish.
What are Private Files?
Private Files are files that you can share via a secure url. You control who the url is given to and the url is created using an algorithm that used certain elements of randomness so that it cannot be predicted. You can also choose to set an expiry time on how long the url will be available for the file to be downloaded. Admins can choose to turn of private link generation and sharing entirely or require stricter policies such as password protection.
What does t.b.d. mean? It is displayed instead of file size?
t.b.d. means "to be determined". There may be an issue obtaining the size of a file from a remote cloud provider on the initial meta sync. This can be if the cloud provider does not give the size or does not know the size. For example if documents are stored as converted in Google Drive, Google Drive does not give the file size of such documents as the file is essentially exported on download and only then is the file size known. Once the file is download once via Nasuni Access Anywhere Server then the file size is known and the file size is updated.
How secure are my files. Can I take any additional precautions?
The short answer is that whenever you upload any file on to any service it cannot be guaranteed 100% secure even though the real danger of anyone accessing it is minimal. This applies to any service, email, cloud storage etc.

Remember that the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server does not store your files, a Cloud Storage Provider does this on their infrastructure. We provide the ability to have additional security features for your files, even if your cloud storage provider does not provide such. For example we enable you to encrypt any file as it is uploaded with a key that only you know.

Should anyone every get access to this file, they would need to know the key before they could access the content. If you forget the key however, even you will not be able to open the file as it is not stored anywhere on Nasuni Access Anywhere Server, so be careful!
I'm a business user and I'm concerned about legislation for the documents I upload
Legislation of data can be of concern to business users if they are using Cloud Storage to user their data. There are three aspects to this, where your data is stored and what country you were in when you stored the data, and also where you reside.

Nearly all Cloud Providers do not tell you where they store your data although Amazon enables you to request an 'EU' bucket if you want data stored to reside in the EU (you can request an EU bucket for your own Amazon S3 account in the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Cloud Provider settings).

Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is also able to provide extra information for all data that has been uploaded for any cloud provider using our service since 13th January 2010. Information is recorded for each file uploaded that lists not only the IP address, but also the city, country and latitude and longitude of where were you when uploaded the file. We are able to do this by integrating with a GEO location service. We also record similar information for the destination of your file at the point of upload.

For further details on HIPPA and other compliance aspect please see the Governance and Compliance section on our Wiki.
What are Business Workspace Groups?
You can think of a business group as workspaces where you can share content with colleagues and friends. Whenever you add new files to a business group, they get shared to all the members of the group members automatically. There is no need for you to share each file again to a set of email addresses. If a new member joins your work team just add him/her to your business group and he/she can see all the files that are there.

You are able to set different permissions for each of the members in your workspace which enables them just to view files or to be able collaborate and upload files You can also share folders as well as files with your business group. For more information please refer to the Business Group Workspaces section of our Wiki.
My folder names are not showing correctly if I use a "/" in the folder name
You cannot use the character in "/" (Slash) in a folder. If you are using an external service in which you use this convention then you should change it. Due to the fact we enable files to be accessible as native drives on Linux, Mac and Windows the use of the slash character is not permitted as this is the convention for delineating a directory.
How can I edit my documents?
The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server integrates with the Zoho Docs service to enable you to edit office type Documents and excel type spreadsheets. Powerpoint type files can also be viewed.

If you are logged into your Google Docs / Drive account and open a file with the Google Viewer functionality then you will also see that you have the ability to save this file in Google Docs.
Also if you have a Microsoft Office 365 commercial subscription you can also edit your files on Microsoft Office online.
Are there any bandwidth limitations? How much data can I upload?
There is a bandwidth limitation of 5GB per month for legacy free users and there is no bandwidth limit for legacy Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Personal Cloud or Business Cloud users. We do however operate a fair usage policy in which we reserve the right to assess users whose use of bandwidth is detrimental to the service, and if necessary limit it.
What are Workflow Rules?
Workflow rules are special types of rules that you can set on files, folders or the entire file tree. You can choose to add details about the file(s) that you want to monitor and to which part of the file this applies to i.e. the filename, extension or description. Whenever any new files or changes to files are made that invoke the rule, you will be notified.

For example if you choose to monitor all files that have the extension .doc, when a new doc files is uploaded to a folder you will be notified. Alternatively you could be monitoring any file title that has the word 'scan' in its title. Again as soon as anything is uploaded in this folder (or sub-folders) that has the word 'scan' then you will be notified.

If you work in teams and want to be notified when others amend files or upload new files then you should find this functionality useful.
What is the Cloud Migration Assistant?
The unique Cloud Migrations Assistant enables you to copy files from one Cloud storage service to another. For example if you wanted to copy your box.net files to Amazon S3 files to Microsoft OneDrive, or to import your Evernote data then the cloud exchange would let you do this.
Can I upload my data using my cloud storage provider tools or other client tools?
Yes, it is possible to upload files directly to your chosen storage provider outside of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Gateway, just as it is possible to delete files. To ensure the view of your data is kept up-to-date within Nasuni Access Anywhere Server you can choose to 'refresh your files view' from the sidebar for your primary cloud provider or simply turn 'real-time' on.
What is Cloud Sync?
'Cloud Sync' is the term we use at Nasuni Access Anywhere Server to refer to what happens when you refresh your files view with the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server. What actually occurs is information about your files, which are held at your storage provider, are made available to Nasuni Access Anywhere Server so you can see any new files or folders you have added direct.

This information is stored within the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server in a meta-repository. For example, if you have 10 files in your cloud storage provider, and you add another two files directly through the website of the storage provider (or another external tool), your cloud storage provider would actually have 12 files and the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server would only show 10 files. This is why it is needed to refresh your view if you work with files that you have added outside of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Gateway.
What if my storage cloud is not available? Can I still access my files?
Being able to backup to the Cloud is hugely beneficial until the day that you wish to access your files and, for whatever reason, your storage cloud provider is unavailable. As the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server functions as a gateway to your provider, if your Provider is down, we are unable to access it.

What you can do is to setup cloud sync so that your files are backed up to another storage cloud. If your Primary Storage Cloud is unavailable we will access your files from your backup storage cloud giving you the peace of mind that your files will always be available should you need them.
I get a token not found error when using the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Windows Apps
This normally occurs if the application cannot connect to the internet and this normally happens for two reasons.

1. No Internet connection
2. Firewall or Spyware blocker blocking the connection.

Have you changed anything or added a firewall or spyware blocker? If so you'll need to add Nasuni Access Anywhere Server to the exclusions.
Can I stream my Music?
You can but you need the download/resume stream setting to be enabled.

In the Browser Nasuni Access Anywhere Server integrates with Windows Media Player so if you want to play a track that is stored on any of the clouds mapped to your account, then you can.

You can also do this using the Windows tooling which enables you to play any MP3 file, and also Flash movie files.

Also using the Windows tooling you can create Cloud Playlists in the WinAmp format to play Music that you store in the Cloud.

Note that all music must be legally owned by yourself and cannot be shared with other users. We will have no option but terminate accounts that breach this ruling.
What is CloudDav
CloudDav is a WebDav layer that we overlay above any cloud that the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server supports even if the underlying clouds do not natively support WebDav. You can purchase CloudDav from the "Cloud Apps" section of the sidebar and once installed you can access the service using https://webdav.storagemadeeasy.com and using your normal Nasuni Access Anywhere Server authentication.
What is the difference between the File Manager and the Lite File Manager on the website?
The Web File Manager uses Ajax and JavaScript to load information into a tree file manager not unlike what you are used to seeing on Windows. It also has richer features such as the ability to drag and drop multiple files for upload.

For many of our business clients sometimes their browsers are locked down so they cannot use such features so the Lite File Manager is an alternative File Manager that is built around HTML which works very quick and has slightly less rich features but should work even if certain browser features are disabled.
I'm using the Web File Manager (not the lite File Manager ) but it just says loading?
We often release enhancements to the Web File Manager. If you see 'loading' for a long time, you may need to empty your browser cache and reload the page to get the latest version of the File Manager.
I deleted my files using the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server but I still see them on my Storage Cloud - how come?
Your Files are not deleted on your underlying storage cloud until you empty the Trash. This is a security measure to ensure you did not accidentally delete your files and then want them back. Once you empty the Trash, the files are deleted on the storage cloud where they are stored. Be aware that when you do this there will be no way for us to recover your files.
How do I change the default cloud provider?
To change the default cloud provider from the web, you must login and the click the "My Account" link in the sidebar. Then navigate to the 'Providers' tab, find the provider you wish to make the default, and click 'settings' and from the screen that appears. Now select to use this provider as 'the default'.

You can also navigate to 'My DashBoard' and click on the purple 'def' next to the provider that you now want to make the default.

You can also do this from any of the mobile clients by going to the Cloud Providers' menu and choosing the provider you wish to be the default.
How do I add a cloud storage provider?
Click on the 'DashBoard' link after login, and use the wizard therein to add a nominated storage provider to your account.

You can also add Cloud Storage Providers direct from the iPhone / iPad / Android App. Just go the Cloud Providers screen and choose to add a new Cloud Provider.
How do I delete a cloud provider?
To delete a cloud Provider you can:

From the web: Navigate to 'My DashBoard' from the right sidebar after login. Click on the 'settings' link of the Cloud Provider you wish to remove. Click the 'remove provider' link. This will remove all meta information and the Cloud that is mapped to your account. Note that you cannot remove a primary provider so you should set another Cloud as the Primary before attempting to remove.

From iOS: Navigate to 'Cloud Providers' from the main menu and swipe to delete.

From Windows: Navigate to Cloud Provider from the Windows DashBoard, highlight the Cloud Provider to be removed and click the remove button.
I click on a file to download it and I get a 'file not found' error?
This can occur for two reasons. One is that the upload was interrupted on completion and the file appears in the cache but was not uploaded.

The second is that the file was deleted from the underlying cloud direct and the cache has not been refreshed.

You should always ensure you have backup of any cloud files using our desktop to cloud solutions, and also ensure for maximum availability of your files that you use our cloud to cloud backup technology (paid accounts only)
If I click on a file in Internet Explorer I am unable to download it, but I can from other clients or other browsers?
This is a bug that can affect different versions of Internet Explorer

If you do have this issue please see this article from Microsoft that if implemented will resolve the problem
Can I decrypt the files I upload to my Cloud through the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server without access to Nasuni Access Anywhere Server?
The File Fabirc enables users to choose a private key to encrypt files on upload to their underlying cloud and does not store this key on the platform.

Nasuni Access Anywhere Server uses AES-256 encryption using the Rijndael cipher, with Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) where the block size is 16 bytes, to do this.

You can use any AES-256 decryption tool that supports the Rijndael cipher with 16 byte block sizes. Nasuni Access Anywhere Server also provides a file decryption tool that is available for Mac, Windows and Linux and can be downloaded from here
Can I use my own file server with the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server?
Yes you can do this in two different ways:

1. Use your own FTP Server: Nasuni Access Anywhere Server enables you to use your own FTP Server as a means of storing files which means the space is only limited by the amount of storage you have, and you can also access these files wherever you are in the world. If you want to ensure these files are backed up, you can use Cloud Sync to set a sync task to back these files up to another public storage cloud.

2. Use your own WebDav Server: WebDAV can be viewed as a network filesystem suitable for the Internet. It is an open, IETF proposed standard and there are many guides on how to setup your own WebDav server on the Internet. As with the FTP solution you are limited only by the storage capacity you have and can again access your files from anywhere in the world and are able to user Cloud Sync to ensure they are backed up to a public cloud.

Also don't forget that with both solutions you can choose to encrypt files as an extra layer of security.
I signed up for the Personal or Business Plan. Where can I download the Apps?
Simply login to your Account from the web and on the right sidebar click "Cloud Apps". This link will take you to the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server App Store where you can download the relevant Apps for your Account.
What is 'Lifetime' or 'one-time' business pricing?
'Lifetime' or 'one-time' pricing refers to a one time price payment for the service, any space allocated and product software.

It is available for Nasuni Access Anywhere Server personal cloud accounts or hosted business / team accounts in which companies wish to take advantage of a single payment for their user base rather than monthly recurring payment. The only additional payment for a lifetime account is a recurring yearly maintenance and support cost that occurs from year 2.

Support enables access to Nasuni Access Anywhere Server support and Maintenance enables access to future product versions.

For Personal Account this is 20% of the initial purchase in year 2 and then year 3 etc.

For business team customers this is also 20% of the initial costs paid.

The algorithm used to calculate this yearly pricing for business team users is simply:

No users * $5 (monthly Price) * 12 (industry average customer churn)

This results in companies who use the service for longer than 12 months effectively using it for free thereafter other than the one time recurring annual 20% payment for support & maintenance.

For more detailed examples and further information please see this blog post on Lifetime Pricing.
How do I receive an invoice for my payment?
Login to the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Website, navigate to your DashBoard (right sidebar) and there is a section on the left, "My Payments" which has invoices for your payments.
What are the limitations of the integrated Zoho Web Office Editing
The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server hosted service has no API limitations but for enterprise users using their own integrated version of Zoho office with an API key the API limitations are outlined here.

The general functional limitations of the integrated Zoho web office suite can be found at this link.

Cloud Storage Providers questions

Amazon S3 Amazon S3

Can I use my own S3 Account?
Yes, you can with the free option as well as the paid plan options, and also using the self-hosted enterprise version which also support Amazon Fedramp.
I want to enable multiple users to use one Amazon Account. Can I do this using your service?
Yes, you can exactly do this. You can use the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server SaaS team package as well as the self-hosted enterprise solution. Multiple users can be supported from one Amazon S3 account, using permissions define by SME. It can also be used with IAM Profiles.
I want to chargeback my users bandwidth and storage usage from a single Amazon S3 account. Can I do this?
Yes, you easily do this as you have access to the statistics for user bandwidth and storage usage. We also expose this in our API should you want to automate the chargeback process with internal systems.
I added my Amazon S3 files from Jungle Disk but they show weird numbers and letters as the filenames?
Jungle Disk can store the filenames in an internal format that they use for their service. What you are seeing is how Jungle Disk actually stored your files on te Amazon S3. For clarification Nasuni Access Anywhere Server stores your files with the file names you assign. They are not transposed.
I receive the following error "please resend this request to the specified endpoint" when working with a file
That warning (Please re-send request to the specified temporary endpoint...) is received directly from Amazon S3.

From the Amazon dev forum the reason for this is given: "When a bucket is created, it takes a while (usually no more than 30 minutes) for the DNS entry to be created.
Does Nasuni Access Anywhere Server support Amazon S3 versioning?
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server does not implicitly support S3 versioning, but even if you enable S3 versioning, this will not effect SME.
How do I rename an Amazon S3 bucket?
Amazon provide no facility to rename buckets. See here for direct Amazon information.

Nasuni Access Anywhere Server enables the creation of a unique bucket name when adding an Amazon S3 provider, or alternatively enables existing buckets to be used.

Managing buckets using Nasuni Access Anywhere Server after adding a provider can be done directly from the S3 settings page accessible from the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server DashBoard after web login.

Gmail GMail

The GMail connector is deprecated
Please note that as of 1st January 2017 the GMail connector is deprecated. This means you an still use it but it will not received bugfixes and will not be available in a future (yet to be defined) release, although users who already have this mapped to their SaaS hosted account will continue to be able to use it.
How am I able to use GMail as a storage cloud?
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server has used the IMAP and POP 3 protocols and created a layer above these to enable us to treat GMail as it if were a normal file store. Ultimately your emails end up as file attachments on GMail and you the subject line is the name of your file making searching for your files via the normal GMail client very easy.
How large can my files be?
GMail is supposed to be able to store files as large as 20MB but we find that 10MB is the safest files size to work against
I receive a security access error from Google
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server needs to be able to access your account to refresh your cloud view within Nasuni Access Anywhere Server and also to post files. This access is done using the authentication you provided over HTTPS. If you receive a notification from Google you will know it is the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server system by the IP address which will be 209.188.12.218.

Update: We now support Oauth authentication for GMail so if you receive this message you should remove your GMail account provider and then re-add it. You will be asked to delegate access rather than entering your username and password direct.
What if I want to share files larger than this?
You can upgrade your account to our lifetime cloud package which as well as enabling you to mix and match any number of cloud storage providers and treat the storage as one virtual pool, enables you to split larger files when saving to email so that a 50 MB file for example becomes 5 file attachments if you choose to set the chunk size to 10MB.

Google Docs Google Docs / Google Drive

Does Nasuni Access Anywhere Server work with Google Docs converted files?
Yes, Nasuni Access Anywhere Server works with both converted and unconverted files in Google Docs. You can set how you want your files to be handled by Google Docs within the Google Docs Provider Settings which you can access from My Account->Providers->Google Docs Settings. You can choose to turn convert on or off for files that are uploaded to Google Docs through Nasuni Access Anywhere Server
My file sizes have a zero size when I look in Nasuni Access Anywhere Server at my Google Docs, why is this?
When Nasuni Access Anywhere Server first does a file information sync with Google Docs we are unable to get the file sizes as Google does not provide this through their API, so they are marked as zero. Subsequently when you download or interact with the files via Nasuni Access Anywhere Server the file size is marked correctly. This does not affect desktop to Google Sync as the datestamp is used for the desktop to Google Docs sychronization.
I don't see my Google Drawings after I sync
Google does not currently support the synchronisation of Google Drawings in their API. When they do then this will also be supported by Nasuni Access Anywhere Server.
Does Nasuni Access Anywhere Server support Google Docs 2 step verification, SAML or OpenID?
Yes, for Google Docs and Google Drive accounts that have this setup we support Google's OAuth2 delegated account access mechanism and you will be asked the key phrase when you setup the account.
My docx and xlsx files are not editable in Google
Previously this was the case as Google Did not convert files back to .docx and .xlsx files so we did not convert them to Google's internal format even when convert was set to 'on'. Google changed their API so now this is supported and such files should be fully editable if you have set them to be converted on upload from your Google Provider settings within Nasuni Access Anywhere Server (accessible from your DashBoard).

RackSpace CloudFiles RackSpace Cloud Files

What is RackSpace Cloud Files
RackSpace Cloud Files is an alternative to Amazon S3 for on-demand scalable cheap cloud commercial storage. You can find more about Cloud Files here

OneDrive Microsoft OneDrive

How much Storage does Microsoft OneDrive provide
Microsoft OneDrive provides up to 7 GB of Cloud Storage. You need to register for, or have an existing, OneDrive account to use the service with Nasuni Access Anywhere Server.
Can I access My Live Mesh 2011 files through OneDrive?
No, the Live Mesh service has closed.
What is the largest file size I can upload?
The largest individual file size that OneDrive API supports is 100MB. If you are uploading direct to OneDrive without using the API (direct through the OneDrive site) the limit is now 10GB.
I see that my file sizes are zero why is this?
OneDrive does not provide the file size when we do an initial sync. Everytime you download a file via Nasuni Access Anywhere Server the filesize will be updated correctly, and every file you upload via the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server gateway, the filesize will be recorded correctly.
I can't authenticate and I am sure my password is correct
If you are having this problem when first connecting please validate your password direct with OneDrive. If you have previously added the OneDrive API provider It may be that your password has been changed or the delegation token expired. WebDav WebDav

Is there a public WebDav Server I can use for storage?
Actually many commercial storage clouds support WebDav. These include Box.net, iCLoud, ADrive, Humyo, FilesAnywhere and more.

Mydrive.ch is a fully WebDav compliant storage cloud and has 2GB of free storage and has also been tested with Nasuni Access Anywhere Server. The WebDav url is https://webdav.mydrive.ch.

Alternatively you could event host your own using the Apache mod_dav module.
What is the correct way to map iCloud WebDav server
host: http://webdav.icloud.com

Username: Your username

Password: Your password

Home path: in the format of /username
Is the service suitable for large file transfers over WebDav?
The answer depends on where the WebDav Server is hosted. If this is a commercial WebDav Server then the answer could be 'yes' but using a home server with WebDav is not an optimum solution for large file transfers when using our SaaS Service, although it's perfectly acceptable for normal file sizes in the 10's of MB's rather many hundred's of MB's or GB's.

From a locality perspective for optimum speed, the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server instance and WebDav Server should be co-located for such a local use case. If you have this use case you should consider our Enterprise on-premises Nasuni Access Anywhere Server
I want to use my own WebDav Storage with your Apps and Clients. Can I do that?
Yes, we offer OEM and white label options for our Enterprise on-premises Nasuni Access Anywhere Server for all our Apps and clients or just a subset. The end result is that you would be able to use our Nasuni Access Anywhere Server branded to your business with Apps and tools also branded to your business.

Mac Apps questions

I can't see folders when I try to mount the drive
Firstly if MacFuse was already installed when you installed the Mac Drive, we've known this to cause issue as there are many configuration options in MacFuse and this can lead to certain configurations turned on that cause conflict, even after you upgrade as the config files are not overwritten. There is no real solution to this. It depends what else you use Mac Fuse for and whether you want to uninstall Fuse completely and re-install it again when installing the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Mac Apps.

To uninstall Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Mac Drive, just right click the icon in the System Preferences on the Mac and choose to delete. To ensure it is completely removed you can check /Library/PreferencePanes or ~/Library/PreferencePanes if installed per user. If there is anything there relate to Nasuni Access Anywhere Server you can also delete.

To uninstall MacFuse you should:

sudo -s /Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/uninstall-macfuse-core.sh from Terminal

The other thing to check is your home directory permissions. Nasuni Access Anywhere Server needs access to this and if it is read only there will be an issue mounting the drive or viewing the folders. To check permissions, right click on your home directory (normally your name) and choose 'Get Info'. Then expand 'Sharing and Permissions'. You should see that you have Read & Write permissions. If not then this is the issue. You can repair this, have a look at this post which tells you how.

iPhone/iPad questions

I only seem to be able to access the free Nasuni Access Anywhere Server S3 Cloud. I thought I could access other clouds?
If you can only access the free Nasuni Access Anywhere Server S3 cloud and can not add another then this means you signed up to the wrong free plan.

From the registration page on the iPhone/iPad app, if you click into the 'Package' option you will see lots of free packages you could have chosen. As the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server hosting is the only package we actually store files on, we don't let you delete this cloud from the App. If you contact us and let us know your username and preferred cloud you wish to connect to then we will change this for you.
How do I delete files on the iPhone / iPad?
We follow the normal iPhone convention so just swipe to delete a file.
How do I reset my password?
If you need to reset your pin password to access the App. The only way is to remove the App and then re-install it from the App Store (which is free). This is for security. Obviously the PIN is there to protect your data.

If you need to reset your account password to gain entry to the App then you can do that here for the US servers and here for the EU Servers..
Accessing the App seems slow and I get some errors
There is a bug in iOS in which it seems to have problems with certain types of routers. This can cause general slow down of accessing data and from within Nasuni Access Anywhere Server you can see delays and timeouts which can cause the App to appear to be slow, to hang or crash. You can easily test whether you have this problem. If you have an iPhone, switch to cellular access and, hey presto, the App suddenly appears to work normally. If you have a device without cellular access try connecting via another router and you will see the same thing.
When I try and open a .docx / .xlsx / .pptx file into iWork it crashes
This is an issue with iWork and the newer Microsoft file formats. It is well documented on the Web. You would be better to user the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server CloudDav feature to open your files directly into iWork.
I don't receive emails sent to my FileBox
You can only receive FileBox emails from the email address you registered with Nasuni Access Anywhere Server when signing up. If you are using another email address to send to your FileBox these emails will be ignored.

You can always add another email address that can be used to send to your FileBox by logging in at Nasuni Access Anywhere Server.com and selecting "Cloud Add On's" from the right sidebar.
SME on iPhone/iPad or Touch devices crashes. What do I do?
If this occurs (and of course this can always occur with software, especially when we are dealing with so many cloud API's) then please email us the crash logs.

You can do this by:

• Navigate to Settings - Privacy - Diagnostics & usage - Diagnostics & usage Data
• Tap on the crash and you will see a text field with a crash log. Long press to Select All and then Copy the crash text.
• Paste it into something you can get off of your device (for example, an email and send to us).

Alternatively you can Follow these steps to get the crash logs:

Mac
• Connect your iOS device to your Mac using your iOS connector cable.
• Sync your device.
• Go to the Mac Finder, then choose the "Go" menu's "Go to Folder" option. (The keyboard shortcut is Command-Shift-G.)
• Copy-and-paste this location into the "Go to Folder" field:

~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice
• Open the folder corresponding to your device.
• Select the crash logs for Swift Xplorer, then CMD-Click the items to pull up the contextual menu.
• Select "Compress..." to create a .zip folder.
• Send the .zip folder to SME

PC
• Connect your iOS device to your PC using your iOS connector cable.
• Sync your device.
• The crash log locations vary based on the version of Windows you're running:

Windows Vista & Windows 7: Go to C:\Users\<USERNAME> and manually add "AppData" to the folder path: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData. The complete path is: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows 8, 10, 11: Make sure that you have hidden files and folders enabled in the Folder Options of the Windows Control Panel, then go to:C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\<your iPhone’s name>
• Locate the Swift Xplorer crash logs.
• Zip all the Swift Xplorer files.
• Send the .zip folder to SME
When I try to add a Provider using Oauth the App seems to hang on the loading screen. What can I do?
If this occurs (and it seems for some reason it does for a small percentage of users and appears to be related to router compatibility) then you can add the provider by logging into the website(either storagemadeeasy.com or eu.storagemadeeasy.com depending on which you registered for).

Once logged in, using the same authentication details that you use for the iOS App, then click on 'My DashBoard' from the right sidebar and from the resulting screen choose to add a new provider from the top right hand corner of the DashBoard. Any Cloud Provider you add will then be available next time you login to the iOS App.
I have registered and I am sure I am using the correct login details but I cannot login
This is likely to be because you have the EU switch set to "on" when you have registered on the US site (or vice versa). The sites are kept separate to ensure separate from a data protection viewpoint. Please ensure you have the switch set correctly or you register on the correct server.
I have to re-install the App. Where do I get my activation code
You don't need an activation code. This is only needed when you first setup your account. You can just login with your account details when you re-install.
What is CloudDav and how do I enable this?
CloudDav is a WebDav layer that we have implemented against our API. This enables clouds that do not support WebDav, such as Amazon S3, Google Docs / Drive, DropBox, OneDrive etc, to be able to be accessed from an client or service that supports WebDav.

This makes it ideal for accessing and editing your files using iWork or any other iPad or iPhone application that supports WebDav.

Any one who own or buys iSMEStorage and registers for the 'iOS-any two Clouds Package' gets CloudDav enabled for free. If you purchase the App but register for another package you can have CloudDav enabled for your account for free also. All you need to do is to take a screenshot of the login page displaying your username, send it to us and we will enable this for your account.
How do I delete a Nasuni Access Anywhere Server sync folder from my iPhone / iPad?

Linux Apps questions

How do I a headless command line mount of the Linux Drive?
Create a file where your credentials will be stored: touch /path/to/file/with/credentials.txt
Set 600 permissions to protect your file with credentials: chmod 600 /path/to/file/with/credentials.txt
You should enter the command like this into a bash startup script:
su -c "smemount '/path/to/folder' '--credentials=/path/to/file/with/credentials.txt' --server=SERVER --ct=60 --multithreading" /path/to/folder - path to your local folder that should be mounted.
SERVER - your server (ie. storagemadeeasy.com, eu.storagemadeeasy.com or private server endpoint)

You may execute the command to see description of all params and more examples:
smemount --help
How do I uninstall the Linux Apps
You can uninstall the Linux Apps using the following command from the terminal console:

sudo dpkg --remove storagemadeeasy (for Ubuntu, Debian, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Xubuntu)

sudo rpm -e storagemadeeasy (for Fedora, Centos, OpenSUSE)
Install fails and I see an error "Failed to completely install all dependencies"
To resolve this run this command:

sudo apt-get install -f See also Installing and Uninstalling instruction.
How do I find Nasuni Access Anywhere Server in Ubuntu I cannot see it in my DashBoard?

Windows Apps questions

What versions of Windows do the Windows Apps support
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is certified against Windows 10 and Windows 11. It may work with other versions of windows but will not be officially supported.
What versions of Microsoft Office do the Windows Apps support
Nasuni Access Anywhere Server certifies against Microsoft Office 2007, 2010 and 2013. Earlier versions of Office related programs, such as Office 2003, may work but are not officially supported.
I get the message "Failed to get Token" and cannot login to the Windows Apps
This is usually because the Windows Apps are blocked access to the Internet. The cause can be a firewall or spyware protection in which the program has not been authorised for internet access.
Can I assign a drive letter to the Virtual Drive?
There are two drives with the paid version of the Windows Cloud Apps. One is a WebDav drive for customers who wish zero install clients and the other is our native installable drive. Both allow drive letters to be assigned.
I'm trying to upload some files and they will not upload
If files are locked by a windows process then you may not be able to upload them via the Virtual Drive or Cloud Process. Locking can occur if the file is open or if it is locked by a virus scanning process for example. If you are trying to upload a .exe file it can be blocked by the underlying cloud provider because of virus scanning so if you hit this problem please zip .exe files. The Sync Centre deals with this a different way as it does a shadow copy upload, although you may still have the same problem with .exe files.
I launch the Windows Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Control Panel but cannot see it
You may find, after launch, that you don't see the Windows Control Panel. It may be that this is not the focused window and reside behind another program window that you have open on the windows desktop. You can control tab to navigate to it or just click on it from the windows taksbar. Both of these methods will give it focus.
Are there any known incompatibilities between SME’s Desktop Tools and third party encryption products?
Office files (and perhaps others) may fail to load files from the Windows Cloud Drive if Dell Data Protection - Encryption is in use.
When I install the Office Plug In's for Libre Office I do not see them in the toolbar. Does the product support Libre Office?
Yes, Libre office is supported. If the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server toolbar plug-in's do not appear you can install the .oxt file manually by navigating to Tools->Extensions from the Libre office toolbar and then browsing to where the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server files were installed, normally 'Program Files->Nasuni Access Anywhere Server multi-cloud' and selecting the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server OpenOffice .oxt file. After install, exit and restart Libre Office and you should see the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server toolbar icons. This also works for OpenOffice (if you cannot see the toolbar).
I'm using a Proxy Server, do the Windows Apps support a Proxy Server?
Yes, if you have a Proxy server set in your IE settings the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Windows Apps will also use this setting.
I installed the Windows Apps but some of my icons disappeared?
This is a common windows problem that Microsoft do not seem to want to resolve despite widespread user dissatisfaction. It occurs when two applications both implement custom icon handling. SME enterprise users can disable custom icon handling in their Windows Packager and this should also be the default option in current versions of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Apps so users should ensure they are using the latest versions of the Windows App suite.

CloudDav Questions

I bought the iOS App but I can't login using CloudDav?
CloudDav is automatically activated if you sign up for the 'iOS - any two cloud package' which is the default package set when you register using the iOS App. If you change this package we will need to activate CloudDav manually for you. Please send us an email and we will activate your account with CloudDav.
When I upload files to iWork I see it upload, complete, stop for a second and then upload again?
There seems to be a bug in the latest version of iWork which first attempts to upload the file without AUTH headers (authentication headers). When this fails iWork then resubmits with the correct authentication headers and the upload succeeds. Hopefully this will be fixed in later versions of iWork
When I save or upload files I see a second copy of the file with a timestamp appended. Can I stop this?
This is done as a precautionary measure to ensure that you don't lose the prior file. In Nasuni Access Anywhere Server it is move to the Trash view and you can remove it by emptying the Trash in Nasuni Access Anywhere Server.

If you wish to prevent this behaviour altogether you can choose to turn 'on' the option "Disable versioning when using CloudDav" from 'My DashBoard' after login to the website.
When I access my file over CloudDav I don't see latest files I added directly to my Storage Cloud. How can I see the latest files?
To turn on real-time cache updates on file access over CloudDav please navigate to 'My DashBoard' after login to the website and choose to turn 'on' the "CloudDav real-time refresh" option. This will update the view in real-time on access and show you latest view of directories, but it can be slower as you working in real-time rather than from the cache.
When I connect using iWork and WebDav it seems to hang?
Please ensure you enter the url as https://webdav.storagemadeeasy.com (lower case). We had some reports from users that the iPad on copying across changed some letters to upper case resulting in them being unable to connect. We don't see why this should be, but changing the url to it's correct lower case resolves the issue.
When connecting to CloudDav I can browse the directories, but I am not able to open / read files
This answer is applicable to the on-premises appliance only.

The CloudDav service presents itself over HTTP and HTTPS. If a WebDav client reaches on HTTP, CloudDav does not explicitly redirect to HTTPS (but your browser may).

Since version 1901 of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server all API communication between CloudDav and Nasuni Access Anywhere Server APIs are done internally over HTTPS and CloudDav will accept all certificates from the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server APIs.

In earlier versions before 1901, if a client communicated with CloudDav over HTTP, then the internal API call to Nasuni Access Anywhere Server API would be made over HTTP. If connecting over HTTPS then it would have used HTTPS for the API call.

When a client goes to download a file, the CloudDav responds with a 302 Redirect to a direct URL to download the file. The CloudDav client follows this. Please watch out for certificate validation here. This redirect will be over HTTPS. Ensure that either the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Web Node is serving a valid Certificate or that the certificate is somehow installed on the desktop.

This behaviour is ON by default (and there's no reason why it would not work in most cases) in the Enterprise on-premises Nasuni Access Anywhere Server, however this redirect can be disabled, and instead a file can be read directly through CloudDav.

In the CloudDav configuration file at:

/var/www/smestorage/webdav_html/cgi-bin/configuration

add the following:

allow_redirect_on_download=0

Symptoms of this being a problem are that you may be able to browse the directories, but aren't able to open / read files.

CloudFTP Questions

When I am uploading a very large file it does not seem to upload correctly and restarts. What am I doing wrong?
You need to extend the timeout in your FTP client. Please see this thread for further details.
Is there a limit to the number of connections I can use for CloudFTP?
Yes, you are limited to 5 connections when using CloudFTP. This means we allocate connections for one session.

If you require more connections than this this you should consider our CloudFTP Gateway product which is a dedicated hosted product. Please contact sales for further information.

That will output the certificate into a .pem file.

Nasuni Access Anywhere Server on-premises Questions

How do I get the on-premises Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Application? How is it provided?
The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is supplied as a VMWare image, but it can also be provided as a XEN, KVM, or Hyper-V image if requested. We normally do not ship as a physical appliance but can do this if required.
Can I use the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server on my own site?
Yes, you can use it behind your own corporate firewall and in this context you are fully responsible for it. Nasuni Access Anywhere Server has no access.
Can I brand the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server with my own brand / logo?
Yes, the web, and all the desktop and mobile tools can be fully branded, either by a company or a partner / ISP / MSP.
Does the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server support Hyper-V?
The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is OVF compliant from a hypervisor viewpoint and we already have a recipe for a user to follow to have this running on Hyper-V without too much effort:

1. Convert VMWare disks to a single VHD using vmware-vdiskmanager
2. Set up VM manually with legacy network controller
3. Boot VM and log in as root
4. uninstall VMWare tools (yum remove 'vmware-tools-*' 'vmware-open-vm-tools-*')
5. yum install binutils (there is a dependency in the IC on nm which is in the binutils package)
yum update to get latest packages and kernel version (the IC did not work with the kernel you sent)
6. install Hyper-V integration tools (latest version, we used 3.4)
7. modprobe hv_storvsc (not required but done to test IC)
8. shutdown VM
9. replace legacy network controller with Network Controller in Hyper-V
10. boot vm, should work without issue at this point

Does the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server support XEN?
The Nasuni Access Anywhere Server is OVF compliant from a hypervisor viewpoint and we already have a recipe for a user to follow to have this running on XEN without too much effort:

· 1. Use XenConvert 2.3.1 (very important to use this version!)
· 2. Imported the VHD into the XenServer
· 3. When deploying it in a CloudStack/XenServer environment make sure you select “Other (64-bit)” as OS Type otherwise it won’t boot
· 4. After booting the VM install the XenServer Tools using the root password
How do I use the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server with OpenStack Compute?
Please see this post which outlines how to deploy the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server Appliance on OpenStack Glance.
Can I do a bare metal install of the Nasuni Access Anywhere Server?
Yes This can be done using scripts and our pre-built CHEF configuration. The base OS needs to be 64 bit CentOS 5.9
When trying to trial the Appliance using VMWare Player I receive the message "Preferred mode unavailable". What should I do?
You have run not a common problem especially for windows 8.1 machines.

See: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Player/Installing-Win8-64-bit-guest/m-p/424283

For example You should enable the bios to recognise 64 bit modes ie.

- No-Execute Memory Protection
- Execute Disable
- Virtualization Technology (VT)

And then power cycle the system.
I do not seem to be able to upload large files when using my Internet Information Server when configured for WebDav
When setting up IIS as a webdav server out of the box the maximum file upload size is limited to 28.6MB. You should change the value of maxAllowedContentLength to 4,294,967,294 to allow large file uploads.

You can use the below link to obtain instructions to set the values for your version of IIS:
